Fun Things To Do In Staten Island -- New York City Attractions
72If You Haven't Left Manhattan, You Haven't Seen New York
Ask many New Yorkers if they've been to Staten Island and surprisingly, a good number will admit that they haven't. Because it's somewhat isolated, it unfortunately tends to not get the notice that the other boroughs do, or the love it deserves. However, SI is diverse with unique neighborhoods and top-notch restaurants -- particularly when it comes to Italian food -- and there are plenty of fun things to see and do in Staten Island. There are also a number of interesting attractions. Here are some things to do in Staten Island.
1. The Jacques Marchais Museum Of Tibetan Art (338 Lighthouse Ave.): This impressive museum looks like a Tibetan monestary and houses exhibits that include artifacts relating to Buddhism in Tibet. The museum also has a variety of semi-permanent exhibits, so before visiting, be sure to check out the Web site (linked below) so that you can see if anything special is being displayed that day.
2. Snug Harbor Cultural Center And Botanical Garden (1000 Richmond Terrace): In addition to houseing the gardens, Snug Harbor -- situated on a whopping 83 acres! -- has several art museums (with seasonal exhibits, so check their online calendar to see what's on display) and theaters. The park is also the site of outdoor festivals. Culture vultures are sure to find something to do here; it's definitely worth a visit.
3. Fort Wadsworth (East end of Bay Street, near Verrazano Bridge): Who'd expect to see a fort in New York City?! Though it's no longer in use, the military base is open to visitor. Once there, you can tour the grounds and walk through the passageways. And, psst -- some believe that the place is haunted!
4. Alice Austen House Museum And Garden (2 Hylan Blvd.): This museum shows off the life and work of Alice Austen, who was an accomplished photographer by the time she was 18 -- in 1884! Though photography is obviously much more advanced, her work still stands out. Other photographers are often featured, as well.
5. Historic Richmond Town (441 Clarke Avenue): This is NYC's answer to Williamsburg, VA. Visitors can walk around the village which contains restored buildings reflecting life from SI's beginnings. Guides also demonstrate activities of life from the 1600s. It's a fun and fascinating place to get a taste of New York's past.
